What is Jeet Kune Do?

Jeet Kune Do is the overall concept of fighting created by the late Bruce Lee and continued by legendary martial artist such as Dan Inosanto and Larry Hartsell. This concept can be described as a guide to personal liberation of the martial arts, allowing you to become the best martial artist that you can be. The path to Jeet Kune Do is through the Jun Fan arts (Jun Fan Gung Fu, Jun Fan Kickboxing, Jun Fan Grappling, Jun Fan Western Boxing, etc.).

Jun Fan Gung Fu was Bruce Lee's innovative combination of different martial ideas that occured between 1964 and 1967. In 1967, Jun Fan Gung Fu was transformed into Jeet Kune Do; abbreviated as JKD. Jeet Kune Do eventually became a concept known to a few top JKD instructors. A way of training, a way to adapt to any possible situation that could occur in a self-defense situation and as a way to evolve. Not as a set pattern in the training methods or the learning of organized techniques. This can only be done by researching martial arts to learn more possible paths to take along the different lines of attack to defend. It was meant for his students and generations to come to understand Bruce Lee's fighting methods and to evolve over time so that the art would not be confined as an organized system of set patterns that was concidered the doctrine that could not be questioned.

Jeet Kune Do has evolved very scientifically through a few of his closest students, due to all of the research in martial arts that has been done by them over last nearly four decades. It contains the attributes of many different fighting systems with the basic format consisting of intercepting your opponents strikes to trapping as you would see in Jun Fan Gung Fu (and Wing Chun), utilizing the mechanics of Western Boxing with Boxing to fencing like evasive footwork. In this day and age, it is a complete self-defense method that uses kicking, punching, finger jabs, elbows, knees, head butts, takedowns and grappling (standing and on the ground).

What benefits will I receive?

  • You will learn a complete and extremely effective system for self-defense that is designed for all ranges of combat. Having this capability can provide control and presence of mind to deal with real-world violent confrontations.
  • Training in the arts provides piece of mind for and those you care about.
  • Scenario based fighting provides cardio excercise that promotes overall physical and mental conditioning.
  • Builds self-confidence, self-discipline, self-respect and self-control.

How fast can I progress?

Martial arts in general are not something that you will pick up in one or two easy lessons. To have a basic grasp of the fundamentals generally takes up to six months. Mastery of the arts, like mastery of ones self, is a life long path; however progression from a white belt to a black belt completely depends on the individual.

What are classes like and what will I learn?

Participants should arrive 10-15 minutes early to get ready for class and are encouraged to choose the classes which they are interested in. You will be assigned a training partner to work with for that class (or part of that class). Classes include curriculum / unarmed self-defense class, grappling class and weapons class. These classes include conditioning excercises, stretching, drills, partner drills and violent confrontation theory.
